ECONOMICS 101 AS TAUGHT BY PROFESSOR RALPH Well, hello again!!! In this newsletter we are going to cover to a subject that is of great importance to all of us. Veterinarians. Groomers, both Mobile and Storefront, and Dog Show folks. And that is the rising cost of fuel and its effect on our businesses, recreational lives, and on the economy in general. With regular fuel hovering around $4.00 a gallon, unleaded around $4.10 a gallon, super unleaded at $4.26 a gallon and Diesel at $4.76 a gallon we are all feeling the effects of this situation. And today as I am writing this oil just jumped $10.00 to a record $138.00 a barrel. Because of transportation costs we are seeing inflation rearing it’s ugly head and our economy is sliding into a recession, it would seem. I have a theory that I learned from my Dad and that is this: Recession = Depression (not very likely any more but a logical conclusion when the formula is carried to the extreme). Recently I received a newsletter from a company that sells grooming products and offers sharpening. They presented the idea of increasing sharpening charges by 20% to offset rising fuel costs. It was their assumption that they would lose a certain amount of business by doing that but would offset it by the increased revenue that the majority of their accounts who stayed would bring in. I think this is a wrong assumption for two reasons: 1. Those clients they lose will never be back and they will spread the word about the increase to their friends. An old rule of thumb is that everyone knows at least 25 people in their business. You do the math and you will see that once the word is spread you have lost more than just a few accounts. You have lost a great potential of new business due to bad press. 2. Those who stay with you will not forget that increase and they will be easy pickings for the next sharpener who offers a better price and good work. Once they are lost they won’t be back. This applies to all of us who are in the service business or in the Show Dog game. By all means keep a handle on pricing and if you must increase your charges do it in small increments. Don’t be greedy. Let’s discuss some approaches to handling this problem without contributing to inflation. It can be done with careful planning. If you run a mobile grooming route plan your trips carefully. Think of a circular pattern and make your calls in such a manner that you will be working as you leave and as you return. Running a route that is, say, 20 miles out to your last customer, this means that while you made money outbound you ran twenty miles back to home base not making anything and burning fuel. Call your accounts to be sure that they need your services on that day. If not you eliminate a nonproductive stop and that saves time and money. You can use this approach in your personal errand running also. Don’t go out for just one stop, combine the errand run into all the stops you can do in one trip. Saves on fuel. And ALWAYS keep your gas tank full. This cuts down on evaporation. I keep my tank full, filling up when I have used 1/4 tank. Also keep the tire pressure up to normal, slack tires eat up fuel. And keep your vehicle in for regular servicing, again a properly tuned vehicle will use less fuel. If you have a store front grooming shop keep a list of your accounts and call them when you think it is time to groom the clients dog. This will help to bring in daily grooming jobs. In economic times like these people tend to stretch out the time between grooming or Vet visits. Come up with a “special” say on grooming on a certain day. This does not have to be a lot, just enough to make it attractive to your clients. Veterinarians can come up with similar “specials” for routine check ups. It does not have to be a large discount but it does need to be advertised in your shop window or billboard. If it is not a busy day, keep the lights off in the grooming area but keep the lights on in the reception area. This will save on your utility bill. Set the AC at 78 degrees rather than 72 degrees, again saving on the utility bill. With a little thought you can come up with many little ideas to keep costs down and to keep your fees reasonable. Keep reading and you will see what we are doing along these lines.

TARABAR SHARPENING RATES For as long as possible we will not go up on our advertised sharpening rates. And our deals remain the same. Send in 12 or more blades, shears or a combination of the two and WE WILL PAY THE RETURN FREIGHT. Sooner or later we will have to have a slight adjustment on our labor charges on clippers and dryers but for now nothing changes and we will try and keep it that way as long as possible.
FREE GIFT Now I mentioned doing “specials” for your clients. I will put my money where my mouth is!!! Any order of any kind that is $200.00 or better will get a FREE Andis Detachable Blade Carrying case while supplies last. This blade case is a $14.95 value and well worth it.
A FRIENDLY REMINDER Recently we have received a few orders where blades that are in need of sharpening have been placed freely inside a box, covered and then shipped to us. PLEASE do not do this. You risk the teeth being broken on your blades and having to replace them instead of sharpening them. We will not be responsible for broken teeth on blades on any orders that come in to us this way. Please wrap each blade individually — this takes a few extra moments but trust us when we say it will be worth the extra time.
SHAMELESS PLUG And last but not least always keep your clippers, blades, and shears regularly serviced. You will save money in the long run. A blade that ‘has one more dog’ usage in it will not do a decent job for you. The same applies to shears . And clippers with worn parts will not perform correctly. Thanks for reading this issue and as they say in the newspaper biz — ‘that’s a wrap till next time’.
