Economics made easy:

How to stay in business and not have a cow doing it!!

RULE #1:  you can not spend yourself out of debt!

RULE #2:  see rule #1

For the past year we have all been dealing with a very poor economy.  When I closed the books for the year I congratulated myself on actually having a net profit — a small one but that is better than none at all.

My Groomers and Vets all tell me that business is slow.  Let’s face it, the family pet is not being groomed as often nor are they being taken to the Vet as often.  This is trickle down economics done in a negative manner.  If the money is not at the top then it does not trickle down.  As a result we have to find ways to economize and stay in business.

Instead of doing newspaper ads or mailers try doing these things.  For example, a bill board out in front of your business.  A great many Vets in my area do this plugging their

Services and specials.  Groomers should take note and run weekly specials either using the bill board approach or putting signs in the shop windows.  And be sure to have sales to draw the clients in.  Remember — a smaller profit is better than no profit at all!!

If you are using online computer services, review your client lists for Email addresses and then send them specials via emails.  I must have 10 companies every day contacting me in that manner.  All it takes very little time and no out of pocket money.

In fact, Tarabar is going to use the Email direct advertising approach this year.  We will have weekly/monthly specials that will save you money on our products and services along with our quarterly newsletters.  If you would like to receive these Emails please contact us at tarabar@aol.com and we will be glad to add you to our list.

I am sure that you can come up with more ideas on your own when you put your mind to it.  Pass them on to us and we will include them in our newsletters and give YOU the credit for the idea.

CLIPPER CARE

It is that time of the year where we start getting clippers in for tune ups before the Spring grooming starts up.  So, once again, a few words of caution concerning blade cooling/lubing sprays.  Please go lightly with them.  Far too often I see clippers that have the blade hinge and the blade drive bogged down with hair clippings due to overuse of the spray.  Quite often the first thing I do when servicing a clipper is to remove the blade hinge and clean it thoroughly.  On an Oster or similar clipper this hair build up will slow down the blade lever and the blade will not cut correctly.  On an Andis clipper the overuse of cooling/lubing spray can result in blown switches and — more expensively — blown armatures when the oil gets past the blade drive seals and works its way inside to the armature shorting it out. The armature is the most expensive thing that we replace on clippers.

While we are discussing this area please take a minute to use a tooth brush to clean out all the clippings around the hinge and blade drive.  This will save the motor a lot of strain causing less wear and tear.  Clean the blades as well and keep them in a blade box until the next days grooming.

The most common parts replaced when servicing clippers will be the link, lever, brushes, switches and hinges.  Oster type clippers will almost always need a link, lever and brushes.  With Andis it will be blade drives, hinges and occasionally the cord. Rarely will we have to replace the brushes in an Andis.

The moral of this story?  Take care of your clipper and it will take care of you.
